Why this matters in welding specifically
Welding brings several hazards together at once: electric current, open flame and hot metal, arc radiation, welding fume, compressed gases. A separate class of risk is critical structures: load-bearing members, pressure vessels, pipelines, lifting equipment. A mistake in those shows up late, and not on the person who made it.
What this site is not
- It is not a WPS. A procedure specification is drawn up and qualified for a specific joint, material and equipment to EN ISO 15609 and 15614.
- It does not replace a qualification. The right to make particular joints is confirmed by the welder approval test to EN ISO 9606.
- It is not the text of a standard. We cite standard numbers, but only the official text in its current edition has legal force.
- It is not a safety instruction. Every workplace has its own instructions and hot-work permits — and those take precedence.
About the calculator results
The calculations follow empirical and standard formulae named on each calculator’s page. Real values depend on the actual machine, the batch of consumables, the temperature, the fit-up geometry and the skill of whoever is welding. Treat the result as a starting point, to be checked on a test piece.
Final parameters are set by the welding procedure specification (WPS) and the material certificate, and whether a joint is acceptable is decided by a qualified inspector.
