How to read the designations

A channel is named like a beam: shape, depth in inches, weight in pounds per foot. C10×15.3 is an American Standard channel 10 in deep at 15.3 lb/ft. The depth is exact for every weight in the family; what changes is the web thickness and with it the flange width — a C8×11.5 has a 2.26 in flange and a 0.22 in web.

An angle is named by its dimensions: two legs and a thickness, all in inches. The weight is not part of the name. The last column of each table gives the metric designation of the same shape — L102×102×9.5 is the L4×4×3/8.

Channels and angles at the welding bench

The inside face of a C channel flange slopes, so a part set against it does not sit square without a tapered shim or a trimmed end, and a fillet in the flange-to-web corner runs into the rolled radius. Angle has the same radius in the heel. Both are light for their length and pull toward the welded side: tack both ends, then skip-weld in a balanced sequence rather than running one side out in one pass.

Other names, other series

These are the channels and angles of ASTM A6 and the AISC manual. In Mexico the C channel is sold as CPS and the equal-leg angle as LI, with the weight given in kilograms per metre. European UPN and UPE channels and metric angles are a different series; for those use the calculators for UPN and UPE channel weight and steel angle weight.

Wide flange beams are in the W beam weight chart, hollow sections in the HSS weight chart.

Designations, weights and dimensions follow the AISC Shapes Database v16.0 (2023). The kg/m column is the lb/ft figure multiplied by 1.488; in a few light channels it differs slightly from the number in the metric designation, which is rounded on its own schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a C8x11.5 channel weigh per foot?

11.5 lb per foot, which is 17.1 kg/m — in a channel, as in a beam, the weight is the second number in the designation. A 20 ft length weighs 230 lb.

What does C8x11.5 mean?

C is an American Standard channel, 8 is the depth in inches and 11.5 is the weight in pounds per foot. Unlike a W beam, the depth of a C channel is exact: every C8 is 8.00 in deep, and the heavier ones have a thicker web and a wider flange.

What is the difference between C and MC channels?

A C shape has flanges whose inner face slopes at the standard taper. MC, the miscellaneous channel, covers the sections that do not fit the C series — mostly with wider flanges for their depth. They are separate lists: an MC8×20 is not a heavier C8.

How much does 2x2x1/4 angle iron weigh per foot?

3.19 lb per foot, or 4.75 kg/m. A 3×3×1/4 angle weighs 4.9 lb/ft and a 4×4×3/8 angle 9.8 lb/ft.

How do I read an angle designation such as L6x4x1/2?

L is the angle, 6 and 4 are the two leg lengths in inches and 1/2 is the thickness in inches. The weight is not in the name and has to come from a table: an L6×4×1/2 weighs 16.2 lb/ft.

Is angle iron actually iron?

No. The name is a survival from the days of wrought iron. Angle sold today is hot-rolled carbon steel, usually to ASTM A36, and it welds like any other low-carbon structural steel.
